LBD

I’m always looking for an excuse to dress up, so when my boyfriend invited me to the 125th Anniversary at his family’s race track, Hawthorne Race Course, I could not pass it up. I was waiting for the perfect opportunity to rent a fabulous dress from Rent the Runway, and now was my chance!

After scrolling through my favorites, I decided to order this dress from Opening Ceremony. It was the perfect mix of sexy and sophisticated, and a modern twist on a classic LBD. The best part: it was only $35, even though it retails for over $400! Needless to say, RTR is a dream come true for anyone who has champagne taste on a beer budget.

I paired the dress with one of my favorite statement necklaces, the Natalie from Stella & Dot and my newest S&D piece, the Amelie bracelet. Top it off with some leather heels and I was off to the races (not literally, of course… too muddy!).

Though I may not have had much luck in the gambling department, I received compliments all night long! I will definitely be ordering from RTR again.

Home for the Holidays: Outfits

As promised, I’m sharing a couple of my favorite holiday outfits. I must’ve been pretty nice this year because Santa was good to me! Though I knew almost all of my gifts (oops…) it was because my mom and I scored some serious Black Friday steals. And besides, if you know about your gifts, you won’t have to make as many returns, right?!

Christmas Eve

It didn’t snow at all when I was home! I know what you’re thinking, “Doesn’t she live in Buffalo? Isn’t it always snowing there?” You would think, but not this year… at least not when I was home! Needless to say, I didn’t have to bundle up as much as I normally do around this time of year. I paired my favorite drawstring pants with a comfy sweater, topped it off with some statement earrings and a deep red lip.

Christmas Day

This was one of my Black Friday steal outfits. Gap had 50% off everything, so naturally I took advantage! I’m obsessed with my Stella & Dot “Natalie” necklace, so I incorporated it into this outfit for a bit of sparkle.

How to Dress for Changing Seasons

It’s shaping up to be a warm winter… Thanks, El Niño! (Now that I actually know what it means when people say that…)

As a tribute to this unseasonable warmth, I’m throwing it back to a late September outfit: when it was supposed to be fall, but felt like summer! Whenever the weather is transitioning, it can be hard to decide what to wear.

Transitioning Seasons Outfit | Closet Full of Cocktails

For the not-too-hot, not-too-cold weather, I stand by two rules:

  1. Layers, layers, layers. If it gets too hot, you can take something off. Too cold? Put something back on! For this outfit I added a light, cotton scarf as my one and only layer.
  2. One long; one short. Pair a tank with pants or a long-sleeve with shorts! It will balance out the outfit without making you overheat (or freeze).

Peplum: Part Two

Happy Tuesday! Hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving with friends and family. Can you believe that it’s already December?

As promised, here is the second part of my peplum post. If you didn’t catch the first one, you can find it here! Peplum is a figure-flattering style for almost any body type, and it’s so versatile. You can dress it up or down, depending on the occasion. The possibilities are endless, and always fabulous 🙂

This pink peplum top was the steal of the century, seriously. I bought this top a few years ago at JCPenney… on the clearance rack… for $3. Yes, you read that right. $3!

It’s from the Joe Fresh collection, which I absolutely love. (You can browse the Joe Fresh for JCPenney collection here or head on over to their website.) Joe Fresh is out of Canada, but currently has four U.S. locations in NYC. And they just recently started shipping to the US of A, woohoo! Needless to say, a road trip to Toronto calls for a trip to Joe Fresh.

Peplum: Part One

Good morning, everyone! Who’s ready for Thanksgiving? I sure am! I can’t wait to be home, relaxing with Cosmo (our family dog) by the fire and enjoying family’s company with some delicious homemade food.

For today’s post, I’m featuring a style that is super flattering on nearly every body type: peplum. Peplum is a short flared or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist to create a hanging frill or flounce. This figure-flattering style is predominantly featured in jackets, dresses and blouses.

If you’re built like me, you know that an hourglass figure is often difficult to flatter with certain types of clothes. After trying to pull off many different styles, I’ve found that peplum tops and high-waisted bottoms are the most flattering for my body type.

I spotted this peplum top at Anthropologie last year and was immediately drawn to it! I’m a sucker for polka dots and anything with ruffles. I knew I would get a lot of wear out of it, so off to the register I went!

Styling Tip: Depending on where you’re wearing your peplum, tone down the other parts of your outfit with more straight or streamlined pieces. For example, the peplum in this outfit adds some fullness on top, so I paired it with some skinny jeans (instead of a fuller bottom, like an A-line skirt).

PS – I’ve split this post into two parts, so be on the lookout for “Peplum: Part Two” next week!

Pretty in Ponchos

I’m all about being warm and comfortable, especially this time of year. (I may be used to cold weather in Buffalo, but that doesn’t mean I like it!) If you’re looking to be warm and comfortable this season, ponchos (aka “capes”) are the perfect top layer for any fall outfit.

#1

This first one may not be a traditional poncho; it’s more like a long, blanket-style vest. The Starbucks barista tried complimenting me on it but he wasn’t sure what to call it and frankly, neither did I. But for the sake of this post, I’ll call it a poncho 🙂

Whatever you want to call it, it may not have sleeves, but it’s the warmest thing ever! The heavy wool material is super cozy, and surprisingly not itchy. I originally saw this poncho on Out + Outfit and knew I had to have it! I’ve worn it on warmer days with a plain tank top or on colder days with a long-sleeve shirt or sweater. Similar to the blanket scarf, I like to keep the foundation of the outfit simple with ponchos. They are essentially the “star” of the outfit, so let them shine!

#2

I came across this second poncho while aimlessly “window shopping” online. There happened to be a 40% off sale online only, and you know I can’t resist a good sale!

It’s more lightweight than the previous poncho, but still super cozy. I love the fringe at the bottom and the different colored stripes. It’s all about the details!
